NMI is built as a complementary second gateway for the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region to relieve pressure on the existing Mumbai airport BOM. When fully complete in its final phases (in 2032), it is expected to be able to handle up to 90 million passengers annually, and to connect seamlessly with expressways, suburban rail, upcoming metro lines, and even water taxi services.
